What is Hatch Alpha?

Hatch Canada Founder Peter Kuperman gets very excited when you ask him about Hatch Alpha. “We’re going to give students the ability to build projects for the future,” Kuperman says, with a determined look on his face and a twinkle in his eye.

Hatch Alpha is the newest offering for Hatch Canada, starting due to popular demand and evolving out of the already popular Hatch Prime program for kids aged 7-17 who are interested in coding. Hatch Alpha takes learning programming a step further. It challenges students to solve complicated, real-world problems with coding and programming. The benefit of this is in preparing advanced coder kids for what it will be like working in the industry. It’s essentially training for a possible future career in coding.

“Hatch Alpha projects can open up a door,” Kuperman continues. “When young people are applying to university, it seems like all their stories blend into each other; great grades, interesting extracurriculars… Hatch Alpha projects go that extra mile to stand out against the rest.”

More than just gaining experience in maths and computer sciences, it’s the practical applications of Hatch Alpha projects that give students the experiences that will build important skills that universities look for. Alpha students work with a small team - they have the opportunity to stand out as a leader and get experience early so they’re prepared for what’s to come.

An example of an Alpha project that Kuperman loves to talk about is using programming to organize the flow of students in a school. The team of Alpha students would create a digital representation of traffic flow in the cramped school, track class schedules and all other logistics… and all in two and a half months. Because this project has practical applications and a real-world impact, it gives the students a sense of the bigger picture - how their skills can work to positively affect others.

“We want to give students the maximum opportunity to be all that they can be at age 18,” Kuperman states, “those formative experiences you have as a young adult that will have a pretty major impact on who you’ll be and what you’ll do in the future. Having the Hatch Alpha experience could make all the difference...It can be that simple!”
Hatch Prime and Hatch Alpha offer more than just teaching code. At Hatch, your children and young adults will see a new world opened to them, and learn about different opportunities for their future.
