Helping Your Kids Go to the Moon and Beyond with Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering- Part 2

In Part 1 of this series, we outlined Dr. Jason Mah’s incredible background. Click here to read Part 1. Today we’ll learn about how Hatch Space Camp came to be!

After an incredible career in the space industry, Dr. Mah switched gears and now works for the
Canada Revenue Agency as an industry expert. In his new role he evaluates companies that do Research and Development to determine if they are eligible for tax benefits.

In 2017, Dr. Mah partnered with Hatch Canada to design the curriculum for Hatch’s new Space Camp. “I know [Hatch Canada’s co-founder] Emanuelle from high school,” explained Dr. Mah. “We talked about how we could do a program about mechatronics and mechanical engineering, a platform and curriculum for physics. This could open up a child’s whole world.”

Hatch and Dr. Mah decided to teach science and physics with a space theme to make it more accessible for kids:

"When I was a kid, there weren’t a lot of coding or programming schools, and also not many space camps.  I was always fascinated with planes, I wanted to design planes and then I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me as I went through school. What I did with Neptec  was very unique. Working with NASA and space is a dream for many kids."

Even though space technology and physics may seem a little out of this world for kids, it's not as far out as you might expect. “What you learn is that technology trickles down. What we come up with for NASA eventually affects your heating and cooling devices at home.”

The program at Hatch is brand new and Dr. Mah is very optimistic about it. He hopes it will provide a unique and life changing learning experience for children in Canada. “We hope the kids will learn more, develop their interests,” he shared. “And hopefully there is a spark that becomes a catalyst for their future!

Hatch Canada is humbled to partner with such an amazing mind to deliver what is sure to be an incredible new camp. Hatch Space Camp will teach your children about mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and coding in a fun and accessible way. We can’t wait to tap into their potential!
